Toutefois, alors que l’Histoire nous donne de nombreux exemples d’interprétation stylistique de la végétation, JBH souhaitait plutôt utiliser les feuilles naturelles dans leur mouture originelle aussi vraie que vraie, afin de conserver toute leur authenticité dans des compositions peu conventionnelles. Un obstacle de taille s’opposa alors à cette ambition: Le dépérissement rapide d’un fragile végétal arraché à son milieu naturel. Pour le franchir, JBH mit patiemment au point une technique de pérennisation des feuilles de végétaux avec des matériaux de notre temps. La voici:
La technique des empreintes végétales de JBH consiste donc à faire de feuilles fragiles, des feuilles solides. Pour cela il se sert de la technique du chocolatier. En effet , quand un chocolatier, veut faire une feuille de chêne en chocolat, par exemple, il prend une vraie feuille de chêne, enduit une des faces de chocolat fondu, puis, une fois que le chocolat a refroidi et durci, il décolle la vraie feuille de chêne et garde une feuille de chêne en chocolat. C’est ainsi que procède JBH, mais au lieu d’utiliser du chocolat , il recouvre la feuille à reproduire d’un enduit à prise rapide.
